Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an IUD and Nexplanon?▾

An IUD is placed in the uterus and is approved for roughly 3 to 10 years depending on the type. Nexplanon is a small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm and is approved for up to 3 years. Both are highly effective and reversible. Your provider helps you compare them, and our office can tell you whether Nexplanon placement is available here or by referral.

Does insertion hurt?▾

IUD placement can cause cramping and brief discomfort, similar to a strong period cramp. Pain management options are discussed at your visit.

Can I have an IUD if I have never been pregnant?▾

Yes. IUDs are safe and effective regardless of pregnancy history. Your provider reviews any medical factors specific to you.

What if I want to switch birth control methods?▾

You can switch at any time. Depending on timing and your health history, your provider may remove the IUD and start a new method at the same visit, or remove it and discuss next steps.
