Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can I have sex after IUD insertion?▾

Many providers suggest waiting about a week before intercourse to let cramping settle and lower infection risk; follow the instructions you were given at your visit. Condoms are safe to use right away and add STI protection.

When should I feel for IUD strings?▾

After your first period you can check for strings by inserting a clean finger into the vagina. A string check takes less than a minute. Your provider can show you how at your visit.

Is heavy bleeding or bad cramping after insertion normal?▾

Mild cramping and spotting are normal in the first 24 to 48 hours. If bleeding is very heavy (soaking through pads), pain is severe, or cramping persists beyond a few days, contact your provider. These could indicate a placement problem or another issue that needs evaluation.

What if I cannot feel the IUD strings?▾

Not feeling strings does not necessarily mean the IUD has moved. Strings can curl up or be hard to locate. Call our office so your provider can check placement with an exam or ultrasound.

How often should I come back for follow-up appointments?▾

Ask at your insertion visit whether your provider wants to see you for a placement check. After that, your annual gynecology exam includes a check of the IUD as part of routine care.

What should I do if I think my IUD has shifted or been expelled?▾

If you notice missing strings, feel a hard object in the vagina, have sudden severe pain, or suspect expulsion, use a backup method and call our office for an evaluation. An exam or ultrasound can determine the IUD position.
