Hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Kyleena, Skyla, Liletta) release a small amount of progestin to prevent pregnancy and often reduce menstrual bleeding and cramping. The copper IUD (Paragard) works without hormones and suits patients who want non-hormonal contraception. Both are more than 99% effective.
Duration depends on the type. Skyla is approved for about 3 years, Kyleena for about 5 years, Mirena and Liletta for longer, and Paragard for up to 10 years. Your provider confirms the current approved duration for your device. After that period the device is removed and can be replaced if you wish to continue IUD contraception.
Many patients report mild to moderate cramping during insertion, similar to a strong period cramp. Pain management options are discussed at your pre-insertion visit.
Yes. IUDs are safe and effective for people of all ages and pregnancy histories, including those who have never been pregnant. Your provider discusses any personal medical factors at your consultation.
Common side effects include irregular bleeding (especially in the first 3 to 6 months), mild cramping, spotting and breast tenderness. Many patients have lighter periods or no bleeding at all. Serious problems such as perforation or expulsion are rare; your provider screens for risk factors and checks placement.
